International Women’s Day – March 8, 2023 – Theme: #EmbraceEquity
Dear Friends,
Happy International Women’s Day! Today, we recognize and celebrate the social, cultural and political achievements of women in Ontario and around the globe. We honour the struggles of the women who have contributed to the history of this province and continue to shape the values and traditions we share today. In continuing this important work and building on the successes of the pioneering women who came before them, we carry forward the mission to embrace equity by working to ensure that every young girl and woman has equitable access to resources and opportunities that fit their unique needs and circumstances. Let us empower them to be trailblazers and make bold changes in our world.
As we mark International Women’s Day 2023, we remember that this day is rooted in the collective actions and movements of women who came together on March 8th for the goal of equal participation in society. Women have made important gains in representation in recent years, and while the bar has been raised, the pursuit of equality – through equity – continues.
Women are 50.7% of Canada’s population. Here in Ontario, women make up the majority of the essential frontline workers in several sectors, including health care and social services. Women also represent the majority of workers in the education and childcare sectors, which we know are vital for our children’s well-being. We also know that women have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, both economically and socially. We must be mindful of women’s participation in all aspects of the labour market and not lose the gains made through the years.
This year’s International Women’s Day theme is Embrace Equity, and it reminds us that, as we build back from the pandemic, it is critical to ensure that we build inclusive and equity-driven supports that recognize the intersectional struggles for human rights and justice. This includes dismantling all forms of oppression including racism, homophobia, and ableism.
For this International Women’s Day, let us take this moment to appreciate and thank all who have contributed to the pursuit of equality through embracing equity. When we embrace equity, we embrace diversity, inclusion and belonging.
Sincerely,

Mitzie Hunter
