Today marks Jamaica’s 58th Independence Day. Ontario is home to a vibrant Jamaican diaspora, and I am proud to be a member of the Jamaican-Canadian community. Happy independence day to all celebrating!

Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs

Mitzie is a member of the Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs which is meeting to consult with various sectors of Ontario’s economy about the impacts of COVID-19 and the recovery ahead. This week, Mitzie heard further testimony from witnesses in Ontario’s construction sector.

The Committee is holding hearings on the Small and Medium Enterprise sector. The deadline to register for an oral presentation to the committee is 5:00 pm tomorrow, August 7. The deadline for written submissions is 6:00 pm on August 24.

Emancipation Day March

Saturday August 1 marked Emancipation day, commemorating the date on which slavery was outlawed in much of the British empire, including Canada (then British North America).

This year, Mitzie participated in an Emancipation Day March in downtown Toronto to call for an end to systemic anti-Black racism in Canada’s institutions.

Call for Submissions: Small and Medium Enterprise Consultations

The Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs will meet for the study of the recommendations relating to the Economic and Fiscal Update Act, 2020 and the impacts of the COVID-19 crisis on certain sectors of the economy.

The Committee intends to hold public hearings on the Small and Medium Enterprises sector by videoconference (Zoom) on Monday, August 17, 2020, Tuesday, August 18, 2020; Wednesday, August 19, 2020; Thursday, August 20, 2020; Friday, August 21, 2020; and Monday, August 24, 2020.

Interested people who wish to be considered to make an oral presentation on the Small and Medium Enterprises sector by videoconference or teleconference are required to register by 5:00 p.m. (EDT) on Friday, August 7, 2020.

Those who do not wish to make an oral presentation but wish to comment on the Small and Medium Enterprises sector may send a written submission by 6:00 p.m. (EDT) on Monday, August 24, 2020.

Grants for Community Non-Profits 

The Ontario government is investing $83 million through the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) to provide grants to help eligible non-profit organizations, including food banks, child and youth programs and Royal Canadian Legion branches, recover from COVID-19 and continue the delivery of vital programming in their communities.
