TORONTO – Today Mitzie Hunter, MPP Scarborough-Guildwood gave the following statement regarding the COVID-19 outbreak at Kennedy Lodge Long-Term Care:
“The COVID-19 outbreak at Kennedy Lodge is nothing short of a tragedy for the 30 residents who have passed away, their families, and those who cared for them.
“While the staff at Kennedy Lodge have taken all possible steps to protect staff and residents in partnership with the Scarborough Health Network and Toronto Public Health, the uncontrolled community spread in Scarborough has left our care centres vulnerable.
“The Premier has betrayed the trust of Ontarians by implementing a politically-motivated framework, ignoring the advice of public health experts. He has refused to act, passing the buck to local public health units.
“Instead, the government has pushed through legislation that would protect bad actors from litigation involving COVID-19 deaths in Long-Term care and doubled down on the failed, reactionary second wave strategy.
“The Premier’s latest budget includes very little in new funding to slow the second wave of the pandemic. He has missed a key opportunity to learn from his mistakes and prevent further outbreaks.
“This inaction has a human cost. Long-term care residents and their families deserve more from the Premier than empty words – they need action and investment.”
