MPP Hunter Responds to August 2021 Labour Force Survey

TORONTO – Today, Mitzie Hunter, MPP for Scarborough- Guildwood and Finance Critic for the Ontario Liberal Party, responded to Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey, August 2021.

“Ontarians need a Premier focused on overall recovery and the data of today’s Labour Force Survey highlights that Doug Ford’s mismanagement is leaving Ontarians behind. The report emphasizes that Ontario continues to lag behind in rebuilding the economy. British Columbia has already surpassed pre-pandemic employment levels, while Ontario has yet to do so.” – Hunter stated.

“An overall recovery means acknowledging and acting on the explicit barriers women and Indigenous, Black and people of colour in Ontario face in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Today’s report shows the situation is only getting worse. The Federal Liberal Government has offered solutions to bridge systemic impacts, such as the proposal for $10 a day childcare, yet Ontario’s Premier has not signed on.” – Hunter added.

Meanwhile, there is still an 11% gap between male and female participation rates in the Labour Market.

“While many Ontarians and small business fear the impacts of the fourth wave, they turn to their government for answers. Doug Ford remains without a plan and has decided to prorogue the Legislature until October, preventing the crucial conversations and immediate action Ontarians need.” – Hunter concluded.
