Today Mitzie Hunter, MPP Scarborough-Guildwood released the following statement in response to the TDSB’s back to school planning document:
“The Toronto District School Board responded to the complex task of drafting a safe back to school plan for three scenarios in September. The burden for planning has fallen on boards as the province has not stepped up to provide guidance, leadership, or standardized policies. The results are striking – a safe return to school will cost millions, and with heavy constraints on pedagogy and learning for students.
Whichever scenario is implemented by the TDSB, the need for more funding to hire teachers is clear. Even with additional investment, key programs, including instruction time, French language instruction, are at risk of cuts. The province has not provided school boards with additional funding to respond to the increased staffing needs of boards, and has effectively wasted the summer.
With just 7 weeks remaining before schools are slated to re-open, we are already behind. Parents, students, school boards and education workers need support from the provincial government to have confidence that a safe return to school is possible.”
