Ford Government Destabilizes the Success of Hamilton and the Region by Pulling Out of LRT

TORONTO, ON – Today Mitzie Hunter, MPP Scarborough-Guildwood responded to the Transportation Minister’s cancellation of the Hamilton light rail transit (LRT) project.

Today’s actions show once again that this government can’t be trusted. In April, the PC government made a commitment to the people of Ontario to build Hamilton’s LRT system — a commitment that was explicitly stated in the 2019 budget.

“Instead of investing in Hamilton, this government has chosen to break it’s promise at a late stage in the project’s development, throwing the project into uncertain waters. This investment would have transformed the city of Hamilton, providing businesses, communities, and commuters with the benefits associated with increased connectivity and mobility.

“This broken promise is hugely disappointing. It completely destabilizes the success of the LRT project and the Hamilton region,” said Hunter.

This project was instrumental in supporting Hamilton’s transition to a low carbon economy. A light rail system would enable Hamilton to reduce its GHG emissions at a much faster rate, allowing Ontario and Canada to achieve their climate goals.

“This government will blame previous governments indefinitely for their lack of leadership and responsible stewardship of Ontario. It’s time for them to own up and take responsibility. Today, the government has failed the people of Hamilton and by extension, the GTHA region,” said Hunter.
