Ford Focused on Balancing Books on the Backs of the Most Vulnerable with Election Ahead

TORONTO- Today, Mitzie Hunter, MPP for Scarborough-Guildwood and Ontario Liberal Finance Critic, responded to the Financial Accountability Office (FAO) Report: “Federal and Provincial COVID-19 Response Measures: 2021 Update.”

“Today’s update shows what we have seen all along from Doug Ford throughout this pandemic – a Premier willing to stand by and prolong the hurt for people and businesses,” said Hunter.

The report indicated that Ontario’s share of COVID support measures is 15%, while the Federal Government covered most of the relief costs at 85%.

“Since the onset of COVID-19, the Federal Government has been doing all the heavy lifting,” Hunter stated.

“What is even more alarming is that we have a Premier who is fighting this pandemic on the backs of our most vulnerable. The FAO estimated that the Province repurposed $7.1 billion from education, child care, social assistance programs, student financial aid and health care for their share of relief measures; all of which leave children with autism, people with disabilities, and students behind,” Hunter declared.

“Doug Ford’s actions have delayed Ontarians from receiving the support they need to make it through this pandemic. There is no sense of urgency from Doug Ford, who has a pattern in leaving billions of dollars of the Province’s health care budget and federal cash transfers unspent,” noted Hunter.

“This is the same Premier who consistently flip-flops and delays necessary public health measures such as vaccine certificates, rapid testing and paid sick leave; the same Premier who is refusing to mandate the vaccine for education and health care workers, while the pandemic is prolonged,” Hunter concluded.
