For Immediate Release

June 24, 2014

On Tuesday June 24, 2014, Premier Kathleen Wynne announced that Mitzie Hunter, MPP for Scarborough-Guildwood will join her 27 member cabinet, serving in a new role as Associate Minister of Finance. Hunter will be responsible for executing one of the Ontario Liberal party’s top election platform priorities: the creation of a made-in-Ontario pension plan.

The Ontario Retirement Pension Plan, (ORPP) a policy proposal first included in the Liberal Government’s May budget, will supplement CPP and ensure that Ontarians save enough to maintain their standard of living after retirement.  Hunter will work with a government appointed panel to ensure the ORPP is rolled out by 2017.

“I am honoured to have been appointed by the Premier to lead our government’s work on this critical portfolio. We know that right now Ontarians are not saving enough for retirement and this needs to change. I am thrilled to be working with leading policy experts to ensure we create financial security for a 21st century economy” says Hunter.

Hunter was first elected to the Ontario Legislature in a by-election in August 2013.  She previously served as Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Community and Social Services and her Private Members Bill on Ranked Ballot elections was included in the Liberal Party platform. Hunter brings a wealth of experience and a balance of business acumen and community leadership to her new role as Associate Minister of Finance.  She holds a Master of Business Administration from the Rotman School of Management and has held several senior executive positions with large corporations and non-profits in the Greater Toronto Area.
