Almost 225,000 postsecondary students are receiving free tuition this year, thanks to the new Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). This year, the application for OSAP opened in November — four months ahead of previous years. Students are encouraged to apply for OSAP if they are preparing to attend college or university next fall.
It’s not too late to apply — current college and university students in Scarborough-Guildwood have until 60 days before the end of their academic term to apply. The new OSAP is more generous than ever before, providing free tuition to about one-third of all full-time university and college students this school year. And almost all students who get OSAP get grant funding — money they don’t have to pay back. This year more than 8,286 students in Scarborough-Guildwood are receiving free tuition, and many more are graduating with less debt.
Making postsecondary education more affordable for students and families is part of Ontario’s plan to create fairness and opportunity during this period of rapid economic change. The plan includes a higher minimum wage and better working conditions, free tuition for hundreds of thousands of students, easier access to affordable child care, and free prescription drugs for everyone under 25 through the biggest expansion of medicare in a generation.
“This year, more than 8,000 students in the Scarborough-Guildwood community have benefitted from OSAP, a significant 21 per cent increase over last year’s number. This goes to show that the new OSAP is helping the hardworking students in Scarborough-Guildwood and their families get the financial support they need to attend postsecondary education. Whether you’re a student graduating from high school or a mature student who’s returning to build a better life for your family, OSAP can offer vital assistance towards attaining education and training.”
